Keep abortion safe and legal in Virginia
As our nation grapples with the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade, it’s more important than ever that Virginia uphold and expand protections for abortion access in our Commonwealth.
Every person should be able to decide for themselves when, if, and how to become a parent. Ending a pregnancy is a deeply personal and individual decision that should be left to a person and their doctor – not politicians or a small faction of Americans.
Abortion is still legal in Virginia, but that position is at risk every day from politicians who want to take that right away from all Virginians. That’s why we must make it clear to our lawmakers that the overwhelming majority of Virginians – 79 percent according to a study by Public Policy Polling on behalf of Repro Rising VA – believe abortion should be legal and that we will not vote for lawmakers that do not support the full right to reproductive health, too.

Although abortion remains legal in our Commonwealth, Virginians are quite reasonably worried that the kind of bans being enacted elsewhere could become a reality here. It is more important than ever that you take action to uphold and expand abortion protections in Virginia so that every person can decide if, when, and how to become a parent.
Message Body This ruling affects every person in Virginia – whether they are a person who can become pregnant or the loved one of a person who can become pregnant. But make no mistake; the burden of this decision will disproportionately hurt marginalized communities in our Commonwealth, including Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, immigrants, LGBTQ+ folks, low-income people, young people, and those who live in rural areas. The right to abortion is not just the right to a medical procedure – it is the right to make the most important decision about one’s life, free of governmental interference. The right to an abortion is the right to determine one’s future, to protect one’s health, to put one’s family first, and to own one’s body and decide what happens to it. Forcing pregnancy upon people is wrong and puts the lives of women and people who can become pregnant in peril.
Safe and legal abortion in Virginia is not a guarantee.
That’s why it is of the utmost importance that you support bills that protect and expand abortion access and vote against bills that seek to restrict that access in the upcoming legislative session. Protecting this fundamental right is important to overwhelming majority of Virginians who support abortion, and it should be important to you, too.
